With the Hall of Fame Game canceled in favor of arguments over money, the preseason officially starts this week with five games on Thursday night. The first one televised is Seahawks vs. Chargers at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN. As much as any preseason game is worth looking forward to, especially with an abbreviated amount of preparation time, I’d choose these five.

Honorable Mention: Whenever Plaxico Burress makes his debut for the New York Jets.
Is there anything else exactly like the return of an athlete who’s done a significant stretch in prison? For some reason, I consider it can’t-miss television. I don’t know exactly what I’m expecting. It’s not like the guy’s going to play in leg irons, or Boggs will be chasing him onto the playing field.
Whenever Plax plays, though, I’ll be watching. The Jets’ first preseason game is an ESPN game on Aug. 15, but I don’t know how much time Plax will see there, since he’s got an ankle problem and hasn’t seen much practice time.
5. Week 3: Dallas Cowboys @ Minnesota Vikings. Saturday, Aug. 27, 8 p.m. ET
It feels like it’s been about six years since I’ve seen Tony Romo play football. No disrespect intended to Jon Kitna, but the league’s a more interesting place when Romo’s around. It’ll be good to get a look at the Rob Ryan defense, too. The Cowboys are an all-around interesting team. It’s also our first look at the post-Favre Vikings, with Donovan McNabb trying to yank his career out of the abyss.
4. Week 2: Carolina Panthers @ Miami Dolphins. Friday, Aug. 19, 7:30 p.m.
I confess, the main intrigue here for me is fantasy-related. I want to know exactly how much Miami is going to lean on rookie running back Daniel Thomas. If this game also happens to be when Miami fans stage their “We Demand Kyle Orton“ riot, then that’s a bonus, too. Also: Cam Newton.
3. Week 3: San Diego Chargers @ Arizona Cardinals. Thursday, Aug. 25, 10 p.m.
The third preseason game should give us at least one half of Kevin Kolb. Two quarters of football, I mean — I don’t expect anyone to literally saw Kevin Kolb in half. Also, San Diego’s Ryan Matthews is last year’s version of Daniel Thomas. He was expected to be a workhorse back for the Chargers, but because of injuries and fumbles, he was not. It’ll be interesting to see if he’s got a bounce-back in him.
2. Week 3: Green Bay Packers @ Indianapolis Colts. Friday, Aug. 26, 8 p.m. CBS.
Preseason Week 3 is the closest we get to real football, and this is the best matchup of that week. I don’t know if we’ll see much of Peyton Manning in the preseason at all, given his neck troubles, but it’s a potential Super Bowl preview. It’s not too early to say that, right?
1. Week 3: New England Patriots @ Detroit Lions. Saturday. Aug. 27, 8 p.m. CBS.
I’m excited about the Lions this year. I’m excited to see what a healthy Matthew Stafford can do. I’m excited to see Nick Fairley and Ndamukong Suh together. I want to see if they can make a playoff push with another year of stability and continuity. And the Patriots offer no shortage of intrigue, either, with Chad Ochocinco in the mix. And hopefully, Albert Haynesworth hasn’t washed out of New England yet when this game comes around.
