The Shutdown Five: Preseason games worth watching

24th
Aug. × ’11

With the Hall of Fame Game canceled in favor of arguments over money, the preseason officially starts this week with five games on Thursday night. The first one televised is Seahawks vs. Chargers at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN. As much as any preseason game is worth looking forward to, especially with an abbreviated amount of preparation time, I’d choose these five.

The Shutdown Five: Preseason games worth watching

Honorable Mention: Whenever Plaxico Burress makes his debut for the New York Jets.

Is there anything else exactly like the return of an athlete who’s done a significant stretch in prison? For some reason, I consider it can’t-miss television. I don’t know exactly what I’m expecting. It’s not like the guy’s going to play in leg irons, or Boggs will be chasing him onto the playing field.

Whenever Plax plays, though, I’ll be watching. The Jets’ first preseason game is an ESPN game on Aug. 15, but I don’t know how much time Plax will see there, since he’s got an ankle problem and hasn’t seen much practice time.

5. Week 3: Dallas Cowboys @ Minnesota Vikings. Saturday, Aug. 27, 8 p.m. ET

It feels like it’s been about six years since I’ve seen Tony Romo play football. No disrespect intended to Jon Kitna, but the league’s a more interesting place when Romo’s around. It’ll be good to get a look at the Rob Ryan defense, too. The Cowboys are an all-around interesting team. It’s also our first look at the post-Favre Vikings, with Donovan McNabb trying to yank his career out of the abyss.

4. Week 2: Carolina Panthers @ Miami Dolphins. Friday, Aug. 19, 7:30 p.m.

I confess, the main intrigue here for me is fantasy-related. I want to know exactly how much Miami is going to lean on rookie running back Daniel Thomas. If this game also happens to be when Miami fans stage their “We Demand Kyle Orton riot, then that’s a bonus, too. Also: Cam Newton.

3. Week 3: San Diego Chargers @ Arizona Cardinals. Thursday, Aug. 25, 10 p.m.

The third preseason game should give us at least one half of Kevin Kolb. Two quarters of football, I mean — I don’t expect anyone to literally saw Kevin Kolb in half. Also, San Diego’s Ryan Matthews is last year’s version of Daniel Thomas. He was expected to be a workhorse back for the Chargers, but because of injuries and fumbles, he was not. It’ll be interesting to see if he’s got a bounce-back in him.

2. Week 3: Green Bay Packers @ Indianapolis Colts. Friday, Aug. 26, 8 p.m. CBS.

Preseason Week 3 is the closest we get to real football, and this is the best matchup of that week. I don’t know if we’ll see much of Peyton Manning in the preseason at all, given his neck troubles, but it’s a potential Super Bowl preview. It’s not too early to say that, right?

1. Week 3: New England Patriots @ Detroit Lions. Saturday. Aug. 27, 8 p.m. CBS.

I’m excited about the Lions this year. I’m excited to see what a healthy Matthew Stafford can do. I’m excited to see Nick Fairley and Ndamukong Suh together. I want to see if they can make a playoff push with another year of stability and continuity. And the Patriots offer no shortage of intrigue, either, with Chad Ochocinco in the mix. And hopefully, Albert Haynesworth hasn’t washed out of New England yet when this game comes around.

Hear the footsteps of Tom Brady, Cam Newton and Ray Lewis

24th
Aug. × ’11

The Under Armour people would like to sell you some shoes, and helping them do that are Tom Brady, Cam Newton and the voice of Ray Lewis. We might be likely to see a lot of this ad during preseason football this weekend, so fortunately, it’s kind of awesome.

Also starring are Monica Hargrove and Georges St. Pierre. I’m going to go buy these shoes, and them immediately be able to do GSP’s freakish jumping, spinning push-up thing.

Gracias, Real Clear Sports.

Courtesy of our friends at Under Armour, here’s a behind-the-scenes look at Newton and Brady meeting for the first time, with director Peter Berg (“Friday Night Lights”) in a few shots as well.

Video: Aaron Rodgers channels Allen Iverson in ?practice? bit

24th
Aug. × ’11

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy hasn’t been happy with the recent practice habits of his Green Bay Packers, and he let his team know about it. Aaron Rodgers was asked about the subject, and that’s when he decided to go all Allen Iverson on everybody.

Just in case the original masterpiece has slipped your mind, here it is.

Ah, that Aaron Rodgers. Such a lovable little scamp. If he can find a way this season to get in some Jim Mora, too, he’ll be my hero.

NFL Power Rankings: Top 3 Rookies Poised to Be Mammoth Flops

24th
Aug. × ’11
Rookies in the NFL are harder to project than the stock market.

Aside from a few sure things every season, over half of the first round has just as good of a chance to fail as succeed.

Here are three players that are a bad fit on their team, have serious concerns in one phase or another, or are just were flat out overrated heading into their first season as a pro.

1. Aldon Smith (No. 7)- San Francisco 49ers

He was drafted for his ability to rush the passer, yet the 49ers defensive scheme is a mismatch. The hybrid linebacker is better suited for a 4-3 formation not a 3-4. At this point Smith will likely start the season as a backup.

Will he get five sacks?

Unlikely.

The 49ers reached on Smith and he is going to be nothing more than an average linebacker that struggles to make quick decisions and close out on the ball carrier.

The philosophy at Missouri allowed Smith to focus on drilling the QB, not reading coverage?s and making adjustments in a split second. It?s something that will take a long time to learn, and the impact for Smith until then will be handicapped.

2. Blaine Gabbert (No. 10)- Jacksonville Jaguars

No I don?t have anything against Missouri players, but the team didn?t really prepare their player?s for the next level.

Playing in the spread offense in college, Gabbert isn?t used to taking snaps from under center. He is behind the eight ball already when it comes to footwork and throwing mechanics.

Gabbert has struggled mightily in the preseason thus far and has zero weapons to throw to aside from his tight end. He also has to deal with longtime starter David Garrard, who won?t be going down without a fight.

It?s going to take a long time for Gabbert to fully develop?will the Jags be patient?

3. Nick Fairley (No. 13)- Detroit Lions

At one point Fairley was considered the best player available in the draft. The DT eats up a ton of space and was vital to Auburn?s championship run.

Yet the two red flags on him have already reared its ugly head.

He didn?t stay in great shape during the lockout and came to camp overweight. Because of that, he injured his foot and is now out until right around opening day.

He needs at least 2-3 weeks to build up the strength in his foot to ensure it?s healthy and even then the possibility of suffering a setback is a strong possibility.

Maybe that?s why 12 teams decided he wasn?t worth the headache.

Is Brady Quinn pushing Tim Tebow to third on the depth chart?

24th
Aug. × ’11

Is Brady Quinn pushing Tim Tebow to third on the depth chart? There are a lot of people who believe that Tim Tebow should be the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos. Maybe these people need to get together, organize, and focus their efforts on making sure Tebow is at least the number two quarterback.

According to Mike Klis of the Denver Post, Brady Quinn is making a pretty strong claim on the backup job, too.

Quinn is closing in on his desire to lead a team full time, if not yet at the threshold. Since his splendid preseason performance at Dallas, Quinn has been alternating second-team reps in practice with Tebow. [...]

With the NFL no longer forcing teams to make a No. 3 quarterback designation on game day, there’s a chance Tebow would be used for the occasional “Tebow package” plays, but Quinn would get the longer-term backup role.

“I don’t know why it is, or exactly how to explain it, but Brady is much better this year than he was last year,” Broncos star cornerback Champ Bailey said. “He just seems much more confident.”

With the Notre Dame pedigree, the manicured hair and the dripping-with-schadenfruede draft slide, it’s been easy (and for some, pleasurable) to dismiss Quinn. But there’s got to be something there. He has had two or three games as a professional where he’s looked like a viable NFL quarterback.

He hasn’t done it consistently, obviously (he didn’t play a down in 2010), but at age 26, there’s still time for him. Plenty of quarterbacks have blossomed at ages past 26. Physically, Quinn’s got the tools. He was once thought of as a potential first-overall pick, and David Lee, a quarterback coach who worked with Quinn in the offseason, says he’s got a stronger arm than either Manning brother.

It’s something to keep an eye on. If Kyle Orton goes down for some reason, a heavily hyped college star will step in, but it might not be the one you think.

Eagles? Maclin ready for football after cancer scare

Eagles? Maclin ready for football after cancer scare

Follow Yahoo! Sports on Facebook and be the first to know about the most interesting stories of the day.

Everyone wanted to know what was wrong with Philadelphia Eagles receiver Jeremy Maclin ? the third-year speedster from Missouri hadn’t practiced since the end of the lockout, and there were all kinds of rumors about his health.

Finally, in an exclusive interview with FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer that was released Wednesday, Maclin revealed that he did indeed have a cancer scare this offseason. He was given a battery of tests after suffering mysterious symptoms such as weight loss, iron anemia and irregular results in his blood tests. On May 11, he was told that a diagnosis showed his lymph nodes were “enlarged and hot” ? a possible sign of lymphoma.

Maclin told Glazer of a very different offseason from the norm ? instead of the usual workouts, he had large needles inserted into his back to take biopsy samples. Maclin had bone marrow tests, radiology scans and other tests to make sure that cancer wasn’t an issue.

Meanwhile, the rumors persisted.

“I wanted my privacy on this until I had answers,” Maclin told Glazer, when asked why he didn’t reveal anything. “I don’t like to talk unless I have all the answers about what I’m talking about. It was frustrating to hear all the rumors about me. It wasn’t until this morning that I finally got my final answer and thankfully I’m healthy and ready to return to football.”

After his tests were completed, Maclin finally got the good word on Wednesday afternoon, just an hour before he spoke with Glazer: No cancer. He was in the clear.

“I want everyone to know I’m fine, I’m healthy,” Maclin told Glazer. “I was tested for everything and every single test came back negative. I don’t have mono, I don’t have AIDS, leukemia, all the things people were guessing on, there was nothing … thank God everything has come back negative.

“It was all caused by an inflammatory virus, something that just runs its course through your body or you can treat with medicine,” Maclin said about the source of the scare. “I didn’t need medicine. It’s just something I had to deal with.”

Now that his offseason nightmare is over, Maclin can return to an Eagles squad that has been named the “Dream Team” by more than one pundit. The Eagles were already stacked with talent, but they’ve been hyper-aggressive in the offseason, adding cornerbacks Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins, quarterback Vince Young, and receiver Steve Smith.

This is the second health scare the Eagles have had to deal with this preseason ? defensive tackle Mike Patterson suffered a seizure during practice in early August that was caused by an arteriovenous malformation in his brain. Reports indicate that Patterson is on the road to recovery as well.

In 2010, Maclin caught 70 passes for 964 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Dolphins sign Larry Johnson to help with short-yardage issues

23rd
Aug. × ’11

Why would the Dolphins need help in short-yardage situations? Let’s check out some of the action from Friday night’s preseason game against the Panthers.

So there’s the problem. To address it, the Dolphins have signed Larry Johnson — yes, that Larry Johnson, the one who hasn’t carried an NFL football since the Redskins cut him after two weeks of the 2010 season, to help.

I’m going to hold off on ordering my 2011 Pro Bowl Larry Johnson jersey. I’ll probably do the same for Daniel Thomas and Reggie Bush, because if they were performing at a level that Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano had deemed acceptable, the Dolphins wouldn’t be signing Larry flippin’ Johnson today.

Meanwhile, Miami let Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams walk as free agents, and gave Reggie Bush a two-year deal worth $9.75 million.

Johnson’s 2010 totals with the Redskins were five carries and two yards. He split 2009 between the Chiefs and Bengals, not being particularly productive for either of them. It’s also interesting to note that the Dolphins had worked out Clinton Portis and Tiki Barber recently, too.

Johnson would be the only one of that group known as a pure power runner, which points again to short-yardage duty. It might also point to Tiki Barber and Clinton Portis being in a whole lot of trouble in finding a spot on somebody’s depth chart.

Matt Millen?s son-in-law gets a look from the Lions

23rd
Aug. × ’11

Matt Millen?s son-in-law gets a look from the LionsYou can’t accuse the Detroit Lions organization of holding a grudge.

Matt Millen, who held the job title of “Detroit Lions general manager,” but executed the duties of “Sadistic Tormenter of the Detroit Lions Fan Base,” has a son-in-law who would like to play professional football. The Detroit Lions are giving him that opportunity.

Former Army running back Collin Mooney (married to Michalyn Millen; see a handsome wedding photo here) got a call from the Lions asking him to come in for a workout. Mooney’s a 245-pound power back, so with the injury to Mikel LeShoure, there may be an opportunity for him.

He’s got the support of his papa-in-law.

“He’s given me plenty of advice,” Mooney said of Millen. “He was in the league for 13 years and he knows the business. He’s got a lot of great advice he’s given me. He told me what I needed to do going into camp and the way to give myself the best opportunity to stick around. He’s helped me out a lot.”

Millen was a fine NFL player, so I’m sure he has good advice to give an aspiring NFL’er. The good news is that nowhere in that statement does it say that Millen believes Mooney would be a good NFL player, which would be a very solid indication that he would be a terrible, terrible NFL player.

Mooney’s last college season was in 2008, when he broke the school’s single-season rushing record. When he got the call from the Lions, he was serving as a first lieutenant in the Army at Fort Still, Okla. Best of luck to him.

Gracias, Pro Football Talk.

Chad Ochocinco promises to reimburse Mason Foster?s (potential) fine after hard hit

Chad Ochocinco promises to reimburse Mason Foster?s (potential) fine after hard hitFollow Yahoo! Sports on Facebook and be the first to know about the most interesting stories of the day.

On Thursday, the New England Patriots crushed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a 31-14 win that wasn’t anywhere near as close as the score indicated. Tom Brady was rolling his offense along so well, the young Bucs had trouble keeping up ? and had no trouble admitting it after the fact.

But on at least one play, they gave it their all.

The play happened with 10:04 left in the first quarter, and the Pats at their own 39-yard line. Chad Ochocinco ran an inside route after trailing right for about 10 yards, got his arms up to catch the ball from Brady ? and got completely ‘faced by Bucs rookie linebacker Mason Foster.

The pass was incomplete ? fortunately, Ocho was complete when he got up. Foster was penalized under the “defenseless receiver” rule, the Bucs were docked 15 yards, and Foster can most certainly expect to be a little lighter in the wallet when the league sends out fines this week.

Bucs head coach Raheem Morris talked about the play of his aggressive rookie linebacker after the game.

Obviously, they’re going to err on the side of caution with the National Football League, but you don’t want to deter Mason either. We’re not going to let that be a deterrent for us in how physical we want to play. We’re going to abide by the rules, obviously, but you’ve got to keep that type of mindset in your MIKE [middle] linebacker’s mentality.

It’s bang-bang. There’s going to be some questionable ones like that all year. The human element (from the officials) is definitely going to be a factor.

But the way it’s been explained to me and all the other teams is they’re going to err on the side of caution and I don’t have a problem with it. I didn’t blink.

Here’s the play ? it’s kind of an “owie”:

However, according to the ever-magnanimous Ochocinco via his Twitter account, Foster may not have to reach for his checkbook at all:

Chad Ochocinco promises to reimburse Mason Foster?s (potential) fine after hard hit

Foster responded in kind, via his own Twitter feed:

Chad Ochocinco promises to reimburse Mason Foster?s (potential) fine after hard hit

Awww. Isn’t it nice when we can all get along?
